Blog Prompt One - Danger of a Single Story

Ted Talks
On the first day of English 121, we as a class watched this video. The speaker, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, talks in depth of the dangers of the single story.
By this she means focusing only on what you know (either through the limited information in the media or your first hand information) and not bothering to imagine how the other half feels or what they see.
She brings up her own stories, such as her American roommate's limited knowledge of Africa and her own limited view of Mexico shaped by stories of illegal immigrants.
I believe the message she meant to convey was that no matter the story, there is more.

Introducing Myself
Now how does this relate to me? Well everyone has their own story, and various single stories of how people perceive them. My goal is to talk a little about my incomplete single story, and then expand upon it.

Most people look at me and just see a shy, quiet, and probably awkward girl. They think I probably have a hard time making friends, and I'm probably really weird.

While I am shy and rather quiet, and I suppose I could be described as awkward, I'm not a girl. I've never really felt like I belonged in my own body, and only recently when I discovered the terms "nonbinary gender" and "genderqueer" did I realize, that yes, yes I finally have a way to describe who I am and how I see myself.

And as for me having a hard time making friends? That's partially true too, although I absolutely adore making new friends. I'm just shy, I get nervous and it takes me a little while to open up to people.

Now weird, I'm not a fan of the word weird. I prefer eccentric. Some of my hobbies definitely could be described as weird, but because I share them with my friends I frankly don't care what those not involved think of them. Some of these hobbies include cosplay (the art of replicating a costume from comics, movies, tv, or some other form of media), sewing, knitting, writing, drawing, and oh my lord this list could go on forever!

That's just a small glimpse past the one single story of me, but it shows that there's more to me than people think!
